Google Adds Face Gestures to Android Accessibility Options

The newest beta version of Android 12 brings a new accessibility option to Android: face gestures. The feature recognizes six different face gestures using the front camera, and lets users assign those to specific actions that work across many apps. The face gestures are: open mouth, smile, raise eyebrows, look left, look right, and look up. The actions include: scroll forward, scroll backward, next, previous, select, touch & hold, back, home, notifications, and quick settings. The feature is available Settings > Accessibility > Switch Access. Switch Access was originally designed to work with hardware buttons connected via USB or Bluetooth. Now a "Camera Switch" option has been added. Users of some phones may need to install Android Accessibility Suite from the Google Play Store.

FTC Drops Antitrust Suit Against Qualcomm

The US Federal Trade Commission has decided not to appeal its antitrust case against Qualcomm to the US Supreme Court, effectively ending the matter in Qualcomm's favor. The FTC sued in 2017, claiming that the way Qualcomm links the sales of baseband processors with patent licensing amounts to anticompetitive behavior and unfair business practices. Similar lawsuits have been successful in South Korea, China, and Europe, and the FTC won its case initially. However Qualcomm appealed and prevailed last year. Google Fit Gains Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate Measurement via Camera

A forthcoming update to Google Fit will allow the app to measure heart rate and respiratory rate using only a phone's camera. The update will be available next month. The feature will be available first for Pixel phones, "with plans to expand to more Android devices." To measure respiratory rate, the camera looks at your head and upper torso to detect "tiny physical signals at the pixel level — like chest movements". To measure heart rate, the user places their finger on the camera lens so the app can measure "subtle changes in the color of your fingers".
