Charter Launches Spectrum One Mobile Bundle

Charter has launched a new home internet + mobile service bundle with low introductory pricing. As with Comcast's Xfinity Mobile service, the mobile offering is exclusive to customers who also subscribe to the company's home internet service. For a base rate of $85/month — but just $50/month for new customers in the first year — Spectrum One includes unlimited 5G mobile service (but reduced data speeds after 20 GB), 300 Mbps home internet, and an advanced Wi-Fi 6 router. There are no added taxes and fees. Separately, Comcast announced that its competing Xfinity Mobile service has surpassed five million customers.

FTC Drops Antitrust Suit Against Qualcomm

The US Federal Trade Commission has decided not to appeal its antitrust case against Qualcomm to the US Supreme Court, effectively ending the matter in Qualcomm's favor. The FTC sued in 2017, claiming that the way Qualcomm links the sales of baseband processors with patent licensing amounts to anticompetitive behavior and unfair business practices. Similar lawsuits have been successful in South Korea, China, and Europe, and the FTC won its case initially. However Qualcomm appealed and prevailed last year. Google Fit Gains Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate Measurement via Camera

A forthcoming update to Google Fit will allow the app to measure heart rate and respiratory rate using only a phone's camera. The update will be available next month. The feature will be available first for Pixel phones, "with plans to expand to more Android devices." To measure respiratory rate, the camera looks at your head and upper torso to detect "tiny physical signals at the pixel level — like chest movements". To measure heart rate, the user places their finger on the camera lens so the app can measure "subtle changes in the color of your fingers".
