EU Could to Force Apple to Open iMessage

Google and a group of European mobile operators are petitioning the European Union to force Apple to open up its proprietary iMessage platform. The EU has a new Digital Markets law going into effect next year that seeks to regulate "gatekeeper" services of a certain size. Apple is arguing that iMessage falls outside the scope of the law due to the variety of alternative messaging options available. Google, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, and others have written a letter arguing that iMessage qualifies as a "core platform service". The decision could hinge on whether iMessage is an important channel for businesses to communicate with their customers.

AT&T Suffers Large Cellular Outage

AT&T suffered a large outage of its mobile network this morning. AT&T acknowledged the issue and said it is working "urgently" to restore service. The service DownDetector shows the outage starting around 4am this morning. DownDetector also shows corresponding outage reports for other national wireless carriers, but an order of magnitude smaller. Verizon and T-Mobile told the New York Times that their networks are operating normally, so the reports for other carriers are likely people trying to communicate with AT&T customers. http://dlvr.it/T36R5b

Motorola Refreshes its 4G moto g stylus

Motorola has a new version of its affordable stylus-oriented phone. The new "moto g stylus (2022)" is similar to last year's 4G model, but with a larger battery (now 5,000 mAh) and an upgraded display with 90 Hz refresh. Its 50 megapixel main camera can save photos at full resolution, (unlike last year's edition,) and the 8 megapixel wide-angle camera now does double-duty as the macro camera, delivering higher resolution macro images. The new model is also powered by a MediaTek Helio G88 chip instead of the Snapdragon 678. Other specs are identical, including a large 6.8-inch display with Full-HD+resolution, 16 megapixel front camera, dedicated depth camera, fingerprint reader, expandable storage, fast charging, and headset jack.
