MediaTek Chases Qualcomm with Flagship Chip for Phones

MediaTek's newest chip for flagship-class phones is the Dimensity 9300. It combines Arm's 2023 CPU and GPU core designs with MediaTek's own AI processor and 5G modem. MediaTek boasts many of the same generative AI features as Qualcomm does for its new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, including the ability to run the Meta Llama 2 large language model (LLM) on-device, and the ability to generate images using Stable Diffusion in under one second. The chip's "All Big Core" CPU configuration is unique, with four Cortex-X4 "prime" cores and four Cortex-A720 "performance" cores, eschewing the usual "efficiency" cores normally included for lower-power operations. Graphics are powered by a 12-core Immortalis-G720 GPU supporting raytracing and global illumination. MediaTek claims an extra 46% peak performance and 40% power savings compared to the GPU in its previous generation flagship chip. The Dimensity 9300 also supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, LPDDR5T 9600 Mbps RAM, UFS 4.0, and cameras up to 320 megapixel. MediaTek expects phones powered by the Dimensity 9300 to be available by the end of this year.
